What is your name?
My real name, and what I use to sign my posts with, is Amanda...but you might also know me as TheLittlestUnicorn which was my previous blog name, as well as my chictopia and pinterest account name!
How tall are you? What size do you wear?
I am extremely "petite"! I'm 4'11'' and I usually wear a 00 - 0 or XS and a 5.5 or 6 in shoes. In my collection of vintage clothes my size ranges from 0/S to anywhere from 2 - 6 just depending on the fit!
Why did you start blogging?
I started this blog as a way to share what I was wearing with my Mom - I was constantly on the phone with her saying, "Mom, I wish you could see what I'm wearing today" or "Mom, I'm wearing the belt and purse you gave me, I wish you could see how I styled them."
The blog started as The Littlest Unicorn because I am little and I have a thing for unicorns (especially vintage unicorn jewelry) but have since changed it to Something Old Meets Something New since my focus is on incorporating vintage pieces into your wardrobe to create a unique and modern look!
How do you know about fashion/where do your tips and tricks come from?
I work in a consignment store so that is how I have a foot in the "fashion" door. I casually browse through magazines but mostly look at fashion websites and other blogs for fashion tips/tricks and trends! I have always had a love for clothes though from my "dress up" childhood days to my theatre and costume experience in adolescence to working at a retail shop in the mall and now an awesome consignment shop in adulthood.
How do you know so much about vintage pieces?
My love affair with all things vintage started at an early age. My parents always said I had an "old soul" and that I really belonged in the 60s. But I really started to learn about vintage pieces in high school. I was seriously involved in theatre and through learning about costuming, I learned about the trends of the decades. I started shopping at Design Archives, a vintage store in Greensboro, NC for unique pieces that would set me apart from the rest of the high school kids. I fell in a love with a 70s puffy coat I wore until it practically fell apart, an amazing vintage poncho and I got my senior prom dress there...in addition to many, many more treasures! After that, I was hooked! And it doesn't hurt that my best friend shares the same love for vintage - she has worked at a couple of vintage consignment stores over the years.
You use abbreviations when describing your clothes such as (FC), what do they mean?
I denote where I get each piece from and usually it is the consignment shop I work at called The Fairy Circle. FC is just my abbreviation for the shop. Other abbreviations you might see are BB which stands for Bargain Box, a thrift store and STA which stands for A Second Time Around, another consignment shop.
I recently started adding "vintage" in bold to point out which item is vintage in each outfit!
How do you find such good deals on name-brand and designer items?
I ONLY shop thrift and consignment. Working in one makes it really easy...too easy sometimes...
What are your tips for shopping Thrift, Consignment, and Vintage stores?
See my tabs at the top: one tells the difference between thrift, consignment and re-sale (with examples) and the vintage tab gives some pointers on how to tell if it's really vintage or not.
Who takes your pictures?
Originally my sister...sometimes my friends...but these days, usually me! I just prop the camera up on a stool or something and hop in front real quick. This is why you might see the same background in many pictures.
What kind of camera do you use?
It is a hand-me-down from my sister - FujiFilm, FinePix S5700. I don't know that much about photography.
